Though many people cling to the statement "the best things in life are free", I believe that every action is at the expense of something. Money and power can buy happiness, and it is insane to think that a large pile of money would not make even the wealthiest of people exuberant. Friends and love may not be won by power and money (though they often are), but bought by emotions, personality, and elaborate facades of image. For every action that you view as "free", there is always someone suffering because of it.

Newton's first law states that for every action, there is an equal or opposite reaction. That not only applies to science, but to life as well. As a result of a family going into poverty or a business going bankrupt, you might might find a great bargain on something you have always wanted. But is it really your best day or their worst day? Every tim you strike a deal or have good luck, someone else is having a bad experience because of you.

Money can buy happiness. Everything has a price, and emotions are no different. The best things are not free: they've been purchased. The great time you had at the baseball game or the lover you met at a banquet are the result of social and financial success. Free is a ridiculous term because nothing is without it's price, and therefore the phrase "the best things in life are free" is false.
