The American Dream represents four different principles and asperations, based on such ideas presented in books like Grapes of Wraith and On the Road. It represents the hope for prosperity, the promise of religious and intellectual freedom, the chance for a new beginning, and the principle of equal rights for all citizens. In immigrants, the ideals of the American Dream still thrives, but the American Dream seems to have died in American-born citizens. The American Dream still holds the same principles it did one hundred years ago, but fails to be appreciated by people brought up in America.
When immigrants arrive to America today, they come with the same hopes our ancestors came with when they immigrated. THis often means taking low paying jobs, working long hours, and living in sub-par conditions. To them, this is a much better life. That, I believe, is what our current generation has lost touch with. We don't seem to understand or appreciate the opportunity we've been granted by living in the United States or the freedoms we are granted. Not until we lose these freedoms do we finally appreciate them. If we only knew how our ancestors struggled to give us these opportunities for success, then we would find ourselves working much harder for success. Unfortunately, it appares that citizens with generations of Americans preceeding them have lost appreciation for all that the American Dream stands for.
Civil Liberties and the American Dream have all been lost to slovengly, naive minds, but fortunately, still vivrant in the minds and hearts of immigrants. Until we realize the sheltered, air conditioned lives we live are the product of generations of people carrying out the American Dream , will we too understand and experience the American Dream ourselves. Then, we too, will carry the torch that is the American Dream to future generations
