1: im on raise high the room beams
1: its too good
2: I know
1: i think this is my favorite salinger book so far
1: his diary is too good
2: heh...I started writing messages to my friends in soap on their bathroom walls
2: after I read that
1: did they get it
2: no
2: kit's mom just got pissed
1: man
1: i fucking love salinger
1: its such a great feeling to get off on a book
2: I have kind of a love/hate relationship with him
1: yah, he is kind of disappointing as a person, but as a writer... oh boy
2: once you get more perspective on him and his characters, they don't seem so amazing
2: his ideology is so rigid
1: seymour is a great character
1: but you are right about his ideology
2: I mean, not everyone has the luxury of hiding in new hampshire to escape the corruptness of the real world
1: me and the van dorns baby doll
2: despite his vedic posing, it's all kind of christian
2: that we are all fallen as soon as we grow up
2: it's great stuff, but thinking about it too much isn't helpful
2: you know?
1: you mean its fairly depressing
2: yeah, but not depressing in a constructive way...not to say that all art has to be constructive, but...
1: whenever i gloss over what i think of salinger, i get terribly romantic and incredibly depressed in one horrible moment
1: and what results is the feeling of vacancy and dejection
2: yup
2: reading all of his stuff over and over at age thirteen probably wasn't the best thing for me
2: I used to read the catcher in the rye every six months, at least
1: i know
1: I FUCKING KNOW
1: 8th grade
2: WHAT?
1: i got my god damn hands on catcher on the rye
1: the worst thing thats ever happened to me in my life
1: now im stuck in this god damn holden caulfield mindset probably for eternity and if i ever try to write or do anything creative its just going to come out as cynical manic depressive wish wash
2: nah...you'll get over it
2: for awhile a lot of what I wrote was salinger-esque, but I'm finding my own style. the world can still be beautiful, and it's our job to witness it
2: just witness everything, write everything down, and don't think about it
2: then what comes out will be you
1: well it depends on what one defines as beautiful, not to get caught in some stupid word game
1: i think everything is beautiful
1: just little things like worthless human emotions and every little instant of bull shit is in some way worthless and at the same time priceless
1: and yet in all, unforgettable
I guess there isn't much of a solid point to this else then there is still a lot of hope in a 19 year old boy who hasn't seen much of the world beyond his narrow lense for the past few years. Anyway it's more of a personal triumph that I can attempt to express these things more then anything else.
